I will be visiting Istanbul the end of May 2013 and looking for a hammam that is not raging sexual but gay-friendly slash curious with some playfulness, and also a mix of young an old. Hi Chris. You obviously went to this Hammam ….. Firuz Ağa Hamamı, Çukurcuma Cd. 6, Çukurcuma, Beyoğlu….. Very recently. Can you say more about your experience as I am going to Istanbul soon and want to go to a gay friendly Hammam.

It sounds like a disturbing experience for you. You should realize females have to encounter such episodes like this on a regular basis.

Very good hamam ! No tourist hamam, very small, sauna very goid and mot too hot. Very nice staff, professional and gentile scrubs, wash and massage. Not expensive. To the ladies I want to say: tell the staff on beforehand what you do and do not want, they will listen to that. If you do not tell on beforehand they wash also breasts and erogenic zones. I was surprised by that.

The hamam was closed but it is open now and it is operated as it always used to be.

Dear Jennifer,
I am not familiar with a hamam that would allow couples explicitly other than the Suleymaniye bath (that we do not have reviewed on this site yet!). Mixed bathing is not the norm. In Turkey, I wouldn’t take anything as the last word without asking. I would go to Suleymaniye and perhaps there will not be any children or you might go at at a time where you would not expect any (last entry is at 10pm, it seems at Suleymaniye). Likewise, you could ask some of the more touristy hamams such as Galatasaray, Aga (in Beyoglu), or those in Sultanahmet and see if they might allow mixed bathing at a certain time; you never know. We here would be very interested to see what success/challenges you have in mixed bathing so do report back!

Can you suggest a Hamam that will allow couples to bath together? We have been referred to Suleymaniye but they allow children and we don’t want to be around a bunch of kids either.
